Laal Kaptaan tells about revenge that lasted for decades. In 1789, 25 years after the battle of Buxar, the man named Hunter (Saif Ali Khan) was Naga Sadhu who was looking for a man named Rehmat Khan (Manav Vij).
Through a woman named Noor Bibi (Sonakshi Sinha), Hunter learned that Rehmat was a royal leader somewhere in North India.
At this time, the evil Rehmat takes all the treasures from the kingdom and kills his servants. Together with his army, his trusted man, Aadham Khan (Aamir Bashir), his wife, nurse and new son, he left the fort and is now on his way to the banks of the river Yamuna. When Hunter reaches the fort, there is no one except the widow (Zoya Hussain).
Hunter was injured while fighting several Pathans on the road and also a widow took care of him and treated his wound. Instead, he asked her to bring it with him. Hunter also refused, but he still followed him. After Hunter and the widow left, the tracker (Deepak Dobriyal) who was an expert in finding out where with the help of buffalo strength and also his pet dog, reached the fort.
After a while, the Marathas attacked the fortress and the tracker agreed to help them find Rehmat. Rehmat will give part of the treasure to the Marathas but because he did not do it, they tried to find it. While a few days later, Hunter arrived where Rehmat and his troops camped that night.
Hunter secretly entered Rehmat's tent but did not kill him. Rehmat forces capture Hunter but Rehmat does not want him to be eliminated. He wanted to know who Hunter really was and also why he wanted to kill him.
Rehmat was reminded that 6 years ago, he had been at odds with Hunter and Hunter told him he would finish him. Even then, Hunter saved himself. What happened next formed the rest of the film Laal Kaptan.
