In 2003, the UN Special Representative in Iraq named Sergio Vieira de Mello who was a victim of the bombing and was trapped in the basement of the hotel where he worked in the city of Baghdad. 3 months earlier, Sergio had been married but there was no feeling of love in his marriage relationship.

So he is committed to being with Carolina. Opposing advice from his girlfriend and colleague Carolina (Ana de Armas), Sergio decided to go to Baghdad after the invasion of Iraq in 2003 to help the Iraqi people achieve independence and also negotiate the withdrawal of US troops.

He came to a dispute with American diplomat Paul Bremer who opposed his methods despite pressure from the United States, and also fought against the American occupation of Iraq. He even insisted that he did not have US guards at UN headquarters to separate himself from US occupiers.

Sergio was killed by terrorists during an attack on UN headquarters. Then the United States withdrew from Iraq leading to a long civil war, but Sergio's severely injured colleague Gil (Brian F.Oryry) survived despite his amputations, and Carolina returned to justice work in Rio.
